Without an H

Market days

Saturday morning in Can Cau market. Mud underfoot, mist above. Women buy and sell, men smoke and drink rice wine.

Sunday morning in Bac Ha market.  Hoped to capture a sense of place, but ended up concentrating mostly on patterns and portraits.

In northern Vietnam. Bac Ha and Can Cau are highland market towns in Lao Cai province, near the Chinese border.

Wow – the photos of the people are amazing. These patterns remind me of the Mayan textiles I saw in Peru and Guatemala.

Really good. From the pride of the woman with the purple hat, to the complete openness of the woman in the last shot. Really good.

Lovely shots, as usual. I particularly liked the woman with her hand on the railing and misty landscape extending out behind her.

Thank you. I use a Canon 5D (the ‘classic’ / old Mk I). These shots were mostly taken with the 24-105mm lens, except for the close portraits in Bac Ha, where I used my 85mm f/1.8.

Textile heaven!! The woman in purple is wonderful, and the man blowing smoke, and the photos that show the market. They’re all great. What is it with hill people and intricate needlework? I’m thinking of Laos and Guatemala and I’m sure there are more places. Interesting!
